Here are some tips to help your student have a wonderful experience on recital day!
1. Encourage Regular Practice – Establish a consistent practice routine leading up to the recital. Short, focused practice sessions are more effective than last-minute cramming. Practice playing through their recital pieces without stopping. If they make a mistake, it’s OK! Just keep going.
2. Create a Mock Recital at Home – Make sure their instrument is tuned, out of its case, and ready to go! Then, have your child perform their piece(s) in front of family, friends, or even stuffed animals! Be sure to applaud before they begin, have them bow, and begin their piece. When they are finished, applaud again and have them bow and exit. This helps them get comfortable with playing for an audience and builds confidence.
3. Help Manage Nerves – Talk about how feeling a little nervous is normal and is a sign of excitement. Teach them simple breathing techniques to stay calm and focused.
4. Listen and Offer Encouragement – Instead of critiquing, provide positive feedback and remind them that effort and progress matter more than perfection.
5. Discuss the Importance of Preparation – Help them understand that the recital is not about “getting everything right” but about sharing music with others and celebrating their hard work.
6. Plan for the Day of the Recital – Ensure they get plenty of rest, have a good meal, and arrive early so they can settle in and feel ready.
