MUSIC LESSONS FOR ALL AGES.

James / piano

James Mullany is an LA based, multi instrumentalist, producer, and singer/songwriter. Born in Boston, MA, his musical journey began at the age of 12. Interested in learning more about the drums, James joined the percussion section of his middle school’s concert band. He also began taking piano and drum lessons from several graduates of Berklee College of Music. His passion for music led him to form a classic rock cover band with his four friends, playing drums and performing at various venues throughout Boston until 2011. That same year, he attended Berklee College of Music’s Five Week Program for Drums.

Throughout high school, James further honed his piano playing, vocal abilities, music theory knowledge, as well as his stage presence through musical theater, jazz choir, AP Music Theory, and several monthly performances. His fascination with music production led to him learning to produce with music softwares such as Protools, Digital Performer, Logic Pro, and Ableton for over a decade. He continued his music education at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in 2014, later winning the BMI John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship for his original song “Tomorrow Will Be Yesterday” in 2017. Collaborating with fellow NYU artists, his work garnered over 2,000,000 streams on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

After graduating, James relocated to Los Angeles in 2019, releasing his debut EP under the artist name j.mulay. In 2022 he joined Burbank’s Icon Collective as a Music Instructor. At Icon, James mentors collegiate level music producers in weekly 1 on 1 mentoring sessions. He also teaches larger group classes in subjects such as Groove Theory, Music Theory, Ear Training, and Songwriting. As a keyboardist, he continues to perform at venues throughout the Boston, NYC, and LA area such as: The Viper Room. Bowery Electric, Townhouse Venice, The Satellite, Molly Malone’s, Adults Only, Brickyard Pub, The Knitting Factory Brooklyn, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Webster Hall, and many more.
