Clarinet students will learn the fundamentals of music such as pitch, rhythm, intonation, and terminology. Assembly and care of the clarinet, ligature, reed placement, and maintenance are covered with all beginning students. Beginning students will also learn tone production, proper embouchure, breath control, phrasing and fingerings leading to simple melodies. Technical exercises and in-lesson examples will ensure an understanding of the unique registers of the instrument and an increasing ability to play music of different styles and complexities. As the student achieves an appropriate level of competence, he or she will be able to choose music that suits him or her best. Private clarinet instruction is an important supplement to school bands and ensembles. Advanced students study concertos and advanced solo repertoire. Students will need to acquire an instrument before beginning lessons.
